How far we have come.

I Know Too Many Names – Avalanna Routh

To the world she became “Mrs. Bieber”.

But to us she was our co-fighter, who many years ago played side by side with Vampboy in the playroom at the hospital, in the radiation waiting room, in the outpatient clinic.

And now she is gone, slipping away after almost 6 years of non-stop treatment.

The photo below was taken at the Jimmy Fund walk a couple of years ago – one of the last times they saw each other. A moment captured spontaneously in the spirit of friendship.

Tonight I had to sit down with Vampboy and explain she was gone. He knew how sick she was, and in that spirit noted that this moment was somewhat expected. Asked if he was sad, he said “I can’t be sad, she’ll always be in my head.”

And the battle marches on.

Birthday Girl

Happy Birthday, Baby.

Closer by the Mile

Thank you for this moment – the gift of your readership, the gift of your donations to my walk – this year and in years past. This year, for the first time, Vampboy walked the entire 5 miles we normally do on his own two feet. The same boy who, not long ago, couldn’t walk five steps without tripping due to the Vincristine. The same boy who was so weak and tired that the first two times we did the walk, he slept through it.

A miracle, made real because of you. The people in these photos applaud for you as well. For those that already donated, thank you. Those that still wish to, there’s still time to give by clicking here.

If he can walk.

You can give.
