While VB is enjoying a Memorial Day breakfast of cereal and cranberry/blueberry juice, I thought I’d give all of you stalwart readers a bit of an update.
Our vacation was great — of course, with multiple opportunities to revel in how totally awesome our little guy is. He completely rocked the plane rides — both there and back again. He sat quietly the whole time, occasionally commenting about the cloud in the windows or the cookies shaped like airplanes. He pleased the flight crew to no end by “reading” the emergency information brochure several times — a perfect candidate to sit near the emergency exit and play the hero on a future flight. The only thing I couldn’t get him to do was study in wrapped fascination the “Sky Mall” catalogue — which in the end is probably a good thing. Although, why every mall isn’t a Sky Mall is beyond me!
As for the trip itself, the wedding I officiated went off without a hitch. Given the 98 degree weather and the noonday sun that beat down on guests during the service, I’m proud to say I got through my second wedding as an officiant without anyone passing out (or falling asleep). In addition, VB dutifully rose to the occasion as official “program hander-outer”; his arm outstretched with the biggest smile the second a guest showed up on the horizon.
The highlight of the trip for me was watching VB fall madly in love with the aunts, uncles, cousins and others that we got to hang out with. For many it was the first time they had ever met him — for some it was the first time they had seen him in person since he was very, very sick. It took one uncle jumping in the pool to get VB abandoning all caution and leaping in himself (which required a quick run to the store to pick up a swim suit with built-in floaties). One glance at my cousin’s toy hockey sticks and his first thought waking up the rest of the week was “let’s go wake up Robby and play HOCKEY!”. All in all it was a great reminder of how cool our family is — and how lucky we are that several of them have pools.
Tuesday we are back to Chez Healing for another follow-up MRI, with audiology and brain tumor clinic the next day. Since our last “routine follow-up” didn’t end up so routine, all manner of well-wishing is welcomed.
