My childhood favorite ghost story, which is more sweet than scary, was called In a Blue Velvet Dress, by Catherine Sefton (whose real name apparently is Martin Waddell? Who knew?!). A girl has to spend the summer in an old house in a small town, and her luggage gets lost including all her books. Then old books begin mysteriously appearing on her pillow. Turns out they are being left for her by a sad and wistful young girl ghost (in a, you guessed it, blue velvet dress). It’s girly gothic nirvana! I see it’s on Amazon for $2.74 — a bargain at twice the price!!

For outright spine tingling hair raising omigod I have to stop reading I can’t stop reading horror, I gotta go with The Shining. I love the episode of Friends where Joey has to put the book in the freezer because it gets too scary!
